Welcome Back to School!
Meet Amanda, the newest addition to the Home of the Lions! Amanda will be teaching 7th grade world history and 8th grade U.S. history at Martin Luther King Jr. Technology Academy.
Amanda is one of many teachers across Twin Rivers Unified School District who will be welcoming students back to school on August 8.
While finishing up her teaching credential program this past spring at UC Davis, Amanda attended a job fair where she met Dr. Shana Henry (principal of MLK Tech Academy) and really connected to Dr. Henry's goals for the school.
"I could tell Dr. Henry really cared about her students and the school," Amanda says. "She's very passionate about education, and she wants her students to be successful. Because of this, it ended up becoming a different sort of job interview—one I hadn't experienced before. I found it very easy to talk to her."
From there, Amanda toured King Academy and sat in on a class. "Students came by and actually introduced themselves to me! That may not seem like a big deal to most people, but considering they're junior high students, I was impressed."
After meeting students, other teachers and staff, Amanda happily accepted the position.
This past summer Amanda participated in professional development training and has made connections that will help her become the best teacher she can possibly be.
"My teacher induction mentor, Tangie Crates (a teacher on special assignment, a.k.a. "TOSA"), has been in contact with me and has made sure I have everything I need."
Amanda also attended King Summit, where she was able to bond with the other new and returning teachers, and establish her goals for the year. "My main goals for the upcoming year are to learn more about myself as a teacher and make history fun for the kids! I'm here to support the school with whatever they need."
